Artist Statement

Chel Mandell is an interdisciplinary artist based coastside in northern, California. Chel makes functional and nonfunctional ceramic pieces. Inspired by traditional Japanese concepts of Wabi-sabi, they find inspiration in getting lost in process. Along side their ceramic work they chooses to work with different mediums to push their art and herself along the making process. Chel paints, woodworks, photographs and is interested in found object art. As an artist and an activist, Chel has consistently found themself involved in extremely different scenes, ranging from Bay Area skate/surf culture to contrasting Jewish spaces. The diversity in their affiliations directly flows through their work as blended layers of influence. Most recently, Chel has been creating work with the intention of exploring her deep connection to the ocean which connects to their spiritual practice.  Chel has been adventuring the Bay Area coastline in search of wholeness through the experiences offered by nature.
